Ruby Royale Pin-Up

I met Ruby through CraigsList.org. She was looking for a fresh photographer to help her create images she could add to her pin-up portfolio. Immediately after meeting Ruby at a coffee shop near my studio, I knew I wanted to get her in front of the camera. She has a grace and a beauty that I knew would make for some incredible images…and those eyes! We discussed a lot of different looks, one of which was the imagery from the classic Jane Fonda movie, Barbarella.

A couple days before the shoot, I hit the local Home Depot and built a set I thought would give us the retro modernist vibe we wanted and look interesting when lit up. Ruby was keen on using a hand-held spotlight for some of the shoot, so I rigged a small flash unit with an optical trigger and placed it in a piece of metal air conditioning ducting to make it look like a proper stage light. Worked perfectly! Ruby loved it and we got some great shots from the day. See the gallery below.

Boudoir and pin-up are genres of photography that have resided on the taboo side of the spectrum since the birth of photography in the mid 1800s. Lately there has been a shift as empowered women choose to celebrate their vitality and beauty with a collection of steamy images for that special someone, or simply for their own archives. One very important aspect of photography is its ability to freeze time and document a moment in your life, there to be looked back upon and remembered with a smile as you say, “Damn, I look good.”
