About half way through her pregnancy, Heather contacted me and asked if I’d be available—when the time was right—to work with her creating some stylized maternity images. She and her husband, Brad, wanted them printed in sepia tone to match the prints from the family portrait session I did with them a couple years prior.
Heather said it would be a few months before she was ready because she wanted to be good and pregnant for the session; this gave me plenty of time to bounce ideas around in my head, but the look I went with was pretty much my first instinct. I’m a huge fan of Annie Leibovitz and her wonderful aesthetic when it comes to her portrait work. Her maternity portraits with Demi Moore remain icons in the genre and I knew Heather could pull off the same energy Demi brought to her sessions with Annie. Heather is a strong, beautiful woman with a great face, long hair and some great tattoo work that speaks of her independent spirit. She’s awesome and I was honored to be able to help her document this great moment in her life.
This was a four light set-up, with a brolly box on a boom, directly above Heather, with a small shoot-through umbrella below for fill. I also had two silver umbrellas behind her on either side, producing those great highlights on her arm and her belly. Beyond that it’s all Heather. This shot is the one they had printed and is hanging in their home. It’s exactly what I had envisioned when I started planning this shoot, so I was happy it was the one they chose.
Pregnancy is an exciting time in any woman’s life, and one that should be documented with quality images. Be it monthly portraits throughout your pregnancy, to capture your body’s magnificent transformation, or a single session when the time feels right, the important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in your beauty; that always makes for great images you’re sure to love.
