Each season, the Los Angeles Kings hockey team produces multiple volumes of their fanzine, Royal Reign, to be given away to home game attendees. It’s filled with stories, bios, remembrances, stats, interviews, etc. The organizations only request is that the look of the zine be edgy, hip and fun.
These are a lot of fun to work on because I get to dip into my stock photo library for textures and shapes in my efforts to match the aggressive in-your-face aesthetic of hockey with designs that jump off the page and really pull the reader in. I figure, it’s not a tough sell getting hockey fans at a hockey game to read about their favorite team, so I get to have some fun with it. I’ve been working with the Kings on these zines for the past four years and it’s been a blast.
